Epidemics - Africa now polio-free

The World Health Organization has certified Nigeria and Cameroon free of polio, a crippling disease that usually affects children under five

The UN body is expected to go on to declare that all of Africa is free of the wild polio virus. 

Nigeria's head of primary health care agency Dr Faisal Shuaib said that this was a “proud moment for us and indeed all Nigerians”.

Afghanistan and Pakistan are now the only countries in the world with cases of the wild polio virus.
