New Prime Minister Burnham says he aims to devolve power through “initiatives” like “No. 10 North”, fiscal autonomy, and enhanced local governance. He also wants Britain to rejoin the EU.
Devolution, regionalism, “Manchester-ism”. All aim to break up Britain in one way or another, which – along with membership of the EU – lets multinational corporations operate more freely. They don’t want to deal with nation states that uphold their own sovereignty.
Devolution is not helping the workers of Wales or Scotland. More of the same isn’t going to change the picture.
Devolved local powers in England have always been imposed. Regional “mayors” were imposed despite widespread opposition. Burnham clearly intends to impose yet more fragmentation.
Workers need a united independent Britain coupled with industrial self-reliance if we are to provide for our needs. The first question is how to turn the government away from its course of breaking up Britain.
