New EU law: a reader writes

A Workers reader wrote to a national newspaper in the wake of the King’s Speech about the government’s proposal to more easily adopt EU rules. It wasn’t published, but we’re pleased to do so (in a slightly edited version), especially for the challenge it makes to those who campaigned for Brexit.

“Your editorial on the King’s speech at the State Opening of Parliament on 13 May correctly lambasts the arrogance of Starmer’s Labour Government for introducing the European Partnership Bill that will fast-track EU rules into law without giving MPs a vote.

“Remember the Labour government was freakily elected to an electoral landslide on a historically low share of the vote. Remember also that there was no mention of an EU reset in the Labour Party manifesto for the last general election.

Assault

“Ten years after the Referendum voted to leave the EU, the Labour government proposes to start the process of rejoining. This is a gross assault on our democracy. It must be stopped and we must cast aside apathy in the face of poor government and overturn this insulting approach.

‘Surely it is time to launch a campaign to promote the development of an independent Britain.’

“Surely it is time to launch a campaign on a fundamental issue: to defend the referendum result and promote the development of an independent Britain in order to restore our industry, infrastructure and science and, in the process, build a more prosperous and hopeful future for our nation.

“Brexit hasn’t failed. It has just never been implemented because the establishment – most of the political parties, most of the civil service – was shocked by the Leave vote and has consistently opposed and thwarted any move towards fuller implementation of independence.

“Those opinion polls that ask the British people whether they want decisions taken inside our country still record huge majorities in favour. Also, Starmer’s proposed treaties are “unequal treaties” that favour the EU and harm our national interests – look at fishing and farming.

Outcry

“Moreover Britain is going to hand over billions to the EU with no real benefits accruing. Once this becomes public knowledge there is going be a massive outcry of opposition.

“So your newspaper should consider the gravity of the situation, initiate a major campaign and help to coalesce national feeling against this Bill. Let’s get it stopped in its tracks.

“Maybe the Leavers groups, who campaigned so well in most of the parliamentary constituencies in 2016, should be resurrected too.”
