Make the most of Brexit: a reader writes

A Workers reader had a letter published in his local newspaper recently about the opportunities of Brexit. On the tenth anniversary of the Leave vote, it’s worth sharing with a national audience, especially with regard to the advantage of withdrawal from the Trade and Cooperation Agreement, due for renegotiation.

“In response to a suggestion from a letter writer last week, may I point out that so little of Brexit has been implemented that there would be little to gain [from becoming closer to the EU].

Unacceptable

“To have ‘all the trade and cultural links’ with the EU will, in essence, mean the EU having all the power and control, with the UK having no say in anything. Any reset/realignment with the EU under the European Partnership Bill, which will not be discussed or voted on in Parliament, will mean that the EU will demand terms that will be unacceptable to the UK.

“The first demand will be freedom of movement, followed by the ECJ [European Court of Justice] having the final decision on matters affecting the UK. Further down the line, the UK will be expected to adopt the Euro, join the Schengen area, and remain a party to the ECHR [European Convention on Human Rights], yet the EU, as a bloc, has refused to sign up to the ECHR, following a judgement by the ECJ in 2014, that the ECHR is incompatible with the aims and views of the EU.

Arrogance

“Since the majority Leave vote, remainers have done everything in their power to ensure that Brexit does not happen. The current Prime Minister [Keir Starmer] led the calls for a second referendum following the announcement of the majority Leave vote, showing arrogance and contempt for the electorate’s decision.

“Far from Johnson and the Conservatives being unfortunate with the pandemic coming so soon after the TCA (Trade and Cooperation Agreement) was agreed, it was a godsend to them, as it was a perfect excuse to frighten the public stay silent about Brexit and continue with mass immigration, which they have always favoured.

‘The only way to make the most of Brexit is to withdraw from the TCA.’

“The only way to make the most of Brexit is to withdraw from the TCA when the UK and EU review it this year. This will then automatically put the UK and the EU under WTO (World Trade Organisation) rules. This would be the logical solution. The WTO is the only international organisation dealing with trade between nations, predictably, smoothly and as freely as possible.

“The fundamental goal of the WTO is to use trade as a means to improve people’s living standards, create better jobs and promote sustainability. The EU would not countenance this as it would lose all control and power over the UK.”
