Following 3 days of strike action at the end of June by over 100 workers on the Glasgow underground, their trade union Unite has announced a further 3 days of strikes from July 11 to July 13.
Pickets were out in force at subway stations in central Glasgow on June 28 ensuring full closure of the network. In dispute are pay, shift allowances and working conditions. An offer from Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) was overwhelmingly rejected. Looming over the future of the jobs is the prospect of the introduction of driverless trains - new stock introduced in 2023 are designed for this. No agreement is in place and drivers are still operating them.
Opened in December 1896, Glasgow underground is the world's third oldest, after London's Metropolitan Line, opened in 1863, and the Budapest Metro, opened, like Glasgow's in 1896.
